Just flipping through the latest rotation. Does anyone here like: The Black Keys? The Avalanches? The new Kanye? Antony and the Johnsons? M.I.A? Clap Your Hands? Tom Waits? Does anyone even care?
What about the new Strokes album? I thought it was sub par.

NO. All further mention of Gravy Train, the Shags or the weird-ass trumpet mofo will be removed from the forum in the interest of good taste in music.

"The Voice of Reason" my ass. Just because YOU can't appreciate the subtle poetry of the lyrics, the luminescent melody and the mesmerizing and haunting voice of the singer, don't jump to the conclusion that it's a bad song. Sigh, perhaps one day you will grow to appreciate sophisticated music...we can only hope.

you may have censored the words "Gravy Train" but we all know the soul of the band lies within the unscathed !!!! - each exclamation representing a different contributor to the coalescence of genius that is Gravy Train!!!! Indeed a triumph for the spirit of the human race.

We should have a literary disection of their truly remarkable lyrics, a more intellectual discussion, if you will. I would like to start with the gem:
"get up and make a quick dash then bat my fuckin' eyelash at the big nasty bottle of the shit i drink you may call me a ghetto freak but i won't even blink"
Clearly, these lines are fraught, simply FRAUGHT, with socio-relevant paradigms. By subtly introducing such colloquial terms as "fuckin'", "shit", and "ghetto freak", the creater of the song attempts to alert the listener to the horrors of racial discrepencies that still plague our picture perfect societies. Indeed, the many levels on which these lyrics can be dissected simply astounds the cultured mind!

Hello Hello.
(A) I have safely made it to Australia, but have only now been able to set up my computer and get online. A full, comprehensive (read: long) update to my blog will be forthcoming, but I just don't have the time or energy to write it now, seeing as it is 12:30am here, and I've been drinking heavily this week. Rest assured, however, that so far I've been having an amazing time.
(B) Edward: Hello! I'm glad England is going well! Miss you, buddy. "The Black Keys? The Avalanches? The new Kanye? Antony and the Johnsons? M.I.A? Clap Your Hands? Tom Waits?" --- Who are these musical masterminds? You've been one of the few people recently steering me in the *right* musical direction. I'm interested to learn more....
(C) Shooby Tailor does not appreciate being called "the weird-ass trumpet mofo." Do you have a record? No. And until you do, Shooby Tailor is a more established musician than you are.
(D) Gravy Train!!!! is amazing. Stop hating on the Train. I appreciate all who stuck up for this progressive and innovative rock ensemble; thank you. I especially liked the Yale lyrical interpretation. But for those who have yet to embrace the teaching of Gravy Train!!!!, I hope that you will soon come around. After all, it really is a fun song.

Noah, while I may not in fact have I record, I argue that this makes me a better musician than Shooby Tailor and the Shags (Gravy Train will be left out of this discussion as it seems impossible to have a reasonable discussion of how much Gravy Train sucks wihout making irrational emotions run high). Unlike the aformentioned "bands," I recognize my complete lack of musical talent and thus have chosen not to produce a record as it would besmirch the name of good music. These artists, on the other hand, have not demonstrated such wisdom and thus are less musically talented than myself. In other words, at least musically speaking, sucking and knowing that you suck > sucking and thinking you're good.

NOAH!!!! Good to hear your safe and sound.
Those are just some artists I've been into recently. Maybe I haven't made my musical tastes too obvious besides a few modest mouse tracks amidst raucous bouts of "Party Hard" and Children of Bodom, but I'm an indie snob through and through. Let it be known to the masses.
Black Keys = kick ass, crunchin guitar, blues rock duo Avalanches = Australian production geniuses, sampling a variety of feel good music Kanye (aka Mr. West) = check out track "heard em say" on his latest Antony and the Johnsons = amazingly honest and soulful transexual singer M.I.A. = ex Sri Lankan refugee w/ slick rhyming skills set to beats drawing from many styles Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! = whimsical self-promoted indie rock stars. Vocals simultaneously grating/endearing. Tom Waits = lonely singer/songwriter, classic album "closing time" circa 1970?? a bit depressing but extremely good

Eddie, you are an undercover indie music aficionado. I've lived with you for 2 years now, and I didn't now you were actually hiding good music. What's that about?
They have DC++ on the network here at the University of Queensland, and file sharing is legal. Needless to say, I've been exploiting it pretty badly. I downloaded all of the artisits you suggested (except for M.I.A., which I couldn't find), and now I'm in the process of listening to all this new music. Very exciting! And so far so good.
I'll give you another update after I have formed some solid opinions. But in the meantime, thanks for the suggestions!
